Interesting facts: The conveyors use a multiple wrap takeup arrangement to achieve the required tension in the belt. This results in relatively high tension forces at the head end of the conveyor, when compared to a conventional take-up tower arrangement. The head end retaining wall was constructed using a 40 foot shipping container filled with concrete to achieve the mass required to resist the tension in the belt.

Interesting facts: Tod Consulting has guided the direction of the design and construction to ensure that the D&C contractor provided a solution that would complement Noosa's typically subtle yet attractive infrastructure.

The tight spaces at each end of the bridge were a challenge, because there was limited room to place equipment and materials. The girders for the new bridge were lifted directly off trucks stopped on the adjacent road bridge, using two cranes (spaced about 90 metres apart, and located at each end of the new bridge). Numerous existing underground services required careful location of the support piers at each end of the bridge.

Interesting facts:
When it was discovered that the home of nesting ospreys was directly in the path of the proposed Tewantin Bypass road, the Sunshine Coast Regional Council made a commitment to give the ospreys a new home.
A plan was made to relocate the upper part of the tree containing the nest; and splice it to the top of a new timber pole. The Sunshine Coast Regional Council engaged Tod Consulting to carry out the Structural engineering design.
Chris Dowding of Tod Consulting enjoyed this unusual challenge. Wind loads were calculated with stresses and sways checked for three different pole options.

“It was important that we gave the birds an environment that felt similar to their old home,” said Chris. “The diameter of their original tree was 1050mm at the base. An early proposal was to use a timber pole that was 450mm diameter, but the horizontal sway under wind loads would have been enormous. Fortunately the Council and Energex were able to get a 750mm diameter pole, which was a lot closer to the original tree diameter.”
Tod Consulting also provided the design for the concrete footing and most importantly, the connection to splice the tree to the pole.

“There was an initial idea to use a modified form of the connection that Energex uses to fix transformers to the side of timber pole,” said Chris. “With the tree top, this was unsuitable, because it cantilevers much further from the fixing point than a transformer. We modified the initial idea to be a 2m long steel pipe section that slid over the top 1m of the pole and was glued with high-strength epoxy supplied by Epirez. The tree top was then lowered into the protruding part of the steel pipe and any gaps were filled with the same epoxy.’
The day after the construction work was completed, Council workers observed that the ospreys had moved back into their nest. Recently, it's been reported that the ospreys have laid an egg. Tod Consulting is proud to be part of the team that relocated their tree top home.

Interesting facts: The project is certainly transforming the streets of Nambour, and is set to provide a new social gathering point for the town. Opened on the 5th December 2009 in tandem with the Nambour ALIVE! Festival, the day was attended by the Honourable Stirling Hinchcliffe MP, Senator Claire Moore, Sunshine Coast Mayor Bob Abbot and Sunshine Coast Cr Paul Tatton. It was a great success with entertainers including the Black Sorrows, Dan England, Brett Orr and "A French Butler called Smith"; and market stalls throughout the streets.

The project was funded jointly by the Federal Goverment, Queensland Government and Sunshine Coast Regional Council. Energex also provided funding to help relocate electricity services from overhead to underground lines.

One of the clever hidden features is the reuse of rainwater falling on the roofs of the buildings lining each street, which was the Sunshine Coast Regional Council's own design. Many of the downpipes from the buildings have been drained to an underground rubble pit next to each new tree, giving each tree drinking water that would otherwise be lost. Any excess runs through an overflow pipe to the street drainage system.

Interesting facts: The boardwalk is being re-developed to become a shared zone for cyclists and pedestrians. This requires removal of the existing structure and replacement with a new wider pathway.

Both the Council and Tod Consulting were committed to recycling materials in the design of the replacement boardwalk. Over 70% of the concrete footings for the original boardwalk were kept and extended for the new structure. Many of the large timber logs that were used in the original boardwalk were recycled to form part of the framing for the new boardwalk.

The boardwalk has also been designed to house and protect Council's sand pipe, which is used to regularly replace sand on the beach after storm and weather erosion. Stainless steel valves have been installed at 45m nominal centres under the outside edge of the boardwalk to allow Council officers to replace beach sand at any location along Main Beach. This replaced the old temporary sand pipe, which had been located closer to the water.

Provision was also made to install temporary handrails during times when the beach has been eroded, using concealed inserts that are designed to remain clear of the sand which is continually tracked across the boardwalk by wind and pedestrian feet.

The change to a shared cyclist/pedestrian zone required the width to be increased to 3300mm for Stage 1, and 4000mm for most of Stages 3 and 3A. The new boardwalk has been designed to carry maintenance vehicles, including a S300 Bobcat and a five tonne rubber tracked excavator.

Tod Consulting's Role on Project: Structural engineers providing support advice for bridge related construction issues, to Contractor. Work included design of replacement abutment to eastern side of the Caboolture - Bribie Island Highway overpass Bridge, checking of piles to ensure as-built positions were OK for design loads, checking of broken strand in original girder of Bribie Island Overpass Bridge to ensure bridge capacity was still satisfactory, advice on alternative reinforcement details and structural calculations to check various components as required.

Interesting facts: In December, 2007, Leighton Contractors commenced widening of the Bruce Highway between Uhlmann Road and the Bribie Island Overpass. This contract is the final stage of the Federal Government’s plan to upgrade the Bruce Highway from four to six lanes between Brisbane and Caboolture.

Three bridges were widened to accommodate the works as follows:-

Caboolture – Bribie Island Highway overpass bridge
Captain Whish Bridge (Southbound)
Captain Whish Bridge (Northbound)

The widening of each bridge included a requirement to connect the deck of each existing bridge to the wet concrete of each adjacent new bridge. The constant movement of the existing bridges under traffic loads made these deck connections challenging, but the Contractors made it all work.

Interesting facts: Site previously used as a golf driving range. Client required level house sites on an undulating site which meant a significant length of retaining walls were required. Design included a bio-retention basin to treat stormwater runoff from the site to protect water quality in Lake Doonella. During construction a large quantity of unsuitable earthworks material was discovered requiring removal and replacement.

Interesting facts: Generally, concrete repair projects are complicated for Body Corporates, because of the difficulty in predicting the extent and cost of problems. For this project, Tod Consulting developed analytical methods to predict the levels of corrosion and chloride contamination present throughout the various zones of the building. This allowed us to determine the approximate extents of areas requiring repair, which in turn will allow a Quantity Surveyor to come up with a preliminary cost for the work.

Interesting facts: Viridian Noosa has been some 10 years in the planning and is sited on the “Banana Plantation” site below the Laguna Lookout. The site is extensive and posed significant challenges on every step of the way from a Town Planning, Environment, Geotechnical and Structural Engineering point of view. The design consists of a Galvanized Steel Frame with concrete floors and insulated panel roof framing.

Interesting facts: The site contains two shallow sewer rising mains and one gravity sewer. The building had to be pushed against the northwest lot boundary to miss the sewers and provide enough room for three manual washbays and two automatic washbays. 32MPa concrete was used in the floors to provide resistance to the aggressive action of the wash detergents.

Interesting facts: The viewing platform’s location next to the ocean means that it will often be used by large numbers of people. The diagonal stainless steel lacing for the handrails has the same appearance as the adjacent boardwalk to Coolum, but it was designed for the horizontal forces produced by a crowd. Crowd forces are approximately 4 times greater than the normal forces on a handrail. We used cable theory to design the diagonal lacing and welded these to stainless steel angles hidden outside the horizontal timber rails. The angles work as steel beams in the vertical and horizontal directions, to resist the vertical & horizontal forces produced in the diagonal laces when people push against them.

Current Status: The early works cycleways adjacent to the Schultz Canal in Toombul have been completed and opened for use. Design for other parts of the project continue. The excavation for the tunnel portals at Toombul has commenced - this is where the tunnel boring machines will be assembled to begin their journey towards Bowen Hills.

Tod Consulting's Role on Project: Subconsultant to tod-apl, who are the structural engineers for the hard landscaping. Structural engineering design for cycleways, boardwalks, shelter roofs, tensioned-wire feature structure and pavements in park areas adjacent to Airport Link tunnel portals. These portals are located at Bowen Hills, Kedron and Toombul.

Interesting facts: The cycleway next to the Schultz Canal will be designed to handle loads from the floods that regular occur in the canal.
