This results in relatively high tension forces at the head end of the conveyor, when compared to a conventional take-up tower arrangement. and splice it to the top of a new timber pole. The Sunshine Coast Regional Council engaged Tod Consulting to carry out the Structural engineering design.&lt;br /&gt;Chris Dowding of Tod Consulting enjoyed this unusual challenge. Wind loads were calculated with stresses and sways checked for three different pole options.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“It was important that we gave the birds an environment that felt similar to their old home,” said Chris. “The diameter of their original tree was 1050mm at the base. An early proposal was to use a timber pole that was 450mm diameter, but the horizontal sway under wind loads would have been enormous. Fortunately the Council and Energex were able to get a 750mm diameter pole, which was a lot closer to the original tree diameter.”&lt;br /&gt;Tod Consulting also provided the design for the concrete footing and most importantly, the connection to splice the tree to the pole.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“There was an initial idea to use a modified form of the connection that Energex uses to fix transformers to the side of timber pole,” said Chris. “With the tree top, this was unsuitable, because it cantilevers much further from the fixing point than a transformer. We modified the initial idea to be a 2m long steel pipe section that slid over the top 1m of the pole and was glued with high-strength epoxy supplied by Epirez. The tree top was then lowered into the protruding part of the steel pipe and any gaps were filled with the same epoxy.’&lt;br /&gt;The day after the construction work was completed, Council workers observed that the ospreys had moved back into their nest. Recently, it's been reported that the ospreys have laid an egg. Opened on the 5th December 2009 in tandem with the Nambour ALIVE! Festival, the day was attended by the Honourable Stirling Hinchcliffe MP, Senator Claire Moore, Sunshine Coast Mayor Bob Abbot and Sunshine Coast Cr Paul Tatton. It was a great success with entertainers including the Black Sorrows, Dan England, Brett Orr and "A French Butler called Smith"; and market stalls throughout the streets. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;The project was funded jointly by the Federal Goverment, Queensland Government and Sunshine Coast Regional Council. Over 70% of the concrete footings for the original boardwalk were kept and extended for the new structure. Many of the large timber logs that were used in the original boardwalk were recycled to form part of the framing for the new boardwalk.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;&lt;span lang="EN-US"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-size:small;"&gt;The boardwalk has also been designed to house and protect Council's sand pipe, which is used to regularly replace sand on the beach after storm and weather erosion. Stainless steel valves have been installed at 45m nominal centres under the outside edge of the boardwalk to allow Council officers to replace beach sand at any location along Main Beach. This replaced the old temporary sand pipe, which had been located closer to the water.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;&lt;span lang="EN-US"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-size:small;"&gt;Provision was also made to install temporary handrails during times when the beach has been eroded, using concealed inserts that are designed to remain clear of the sand which is continually tracked across the boardwalk by wind and pedestrian feet.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"&gt;The change to a shared cyclist/pedestrian zone required the width to be increased to 3300mm for Stage 1, and 4000mm for most of Stages 3 and 3A. The diagonal stainless steel lacing for the handrails has the same appearance as the adjacent boardwalk to Coolum, but it was designed for the horizontal forces produced by a crowd. Crowd forces are approximately 4 times greater than the normal forces on a handrail. We used cable theory to design the diagonal lacing and welded these to stainless steel angles hidden outside the horizontal timber rails.
